ステートメント：
1970年、日本万国博覧会（大阪万博）は「人類の進歩と調和」をテーマに、未来を祝う壮大な祝祭として開催された。同年3月から9月までの183日間の会期中、77か国が参加し、来場者数は6,400万人を超えた。戦後の高度経済成長を背景に、日本が国際社会に向けて自らの未来像を提示した、まさに国家的な一大イベントだった。

当時を体験した人々が今なおその記憶を強く語るこの万博は、私のように後に生まれた世代にとっても、提示された未来像の鮮烈さを想像させるに十分である。

本プロジェクトでは、それぞれ異なる立場にあった人々に「1970年」を語ってもらう。ある人は会場に何度も足を運び、一方、ある人は万博とは全く関係のない地にいたというように、その関わり方は人によって大きく異なる。
マルチチャンネルで展開される映像を通して、当時思い描かれた未来、また、あり得たかもしれない未来の輪郭を探る。

Statement:
In 1970, the Japan World Exposition (Expo ’70 in Osaka) was staged as a spectacular celebration of the future under the theme “Progress and Harmony for Mankind.” Over its 183-day run from March to September, 77 nations participated, drawing more than 64 million visitors. Set against the backdrop of Japan’s rapid postwar economic growth, it was a monumental national event through which the country projected its vision of the future to the international community.

The fervor with which those who lived through the Expo continue to recount their memories is enough to evoke the vividness of that envisioned future, even for later generations like my own.

For this project, I invited individuals from diverse circumstances to reflect on the year “1970.” Their relationships to the event vary drastically; while some visited the Expo site repeatedly, others remained in places entirely disconnected from the spectacle.
Through a multi-channel video installation, I seek to trace the contours of the future as it was imagined at the time, as well as the alternative futures that might have been.
